Last week was the Final Competition of the 2023 Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge, hosted by Danfoss Power Solutions in Ames, IA, April 26th – 28th. Students participating in this year’s challenge were tasked with designing and building their own fluid power vehicle to increase their knowledge of the fluid power industry.
Nott Company’s Engineering Manager DJ O’Konek attended the Final Competition after serving as a mentor to the South Dakota State University team, who were awarded 2nd place for their fluid power bike. The responsibilities as a mentor is to provide them guidance on circuit design and component selection. This mentorship ensures they are creating a safe vehicle for the competition, in addition to motivating them and creating excitement for the fluid power industry and hopefully a career within it.
“The team at South Dakota had no returning members from last year’s competition and very little exposure to hydraulics prior to working on their vehicle, so a lot of the time we spent together was coaching them on circuit design and the efficiencies of different approaches,” says O’Konek about working with the SDSU team. “It was very rewarding to see them grow as individuals and as a team through the development of their vehicle.”
