Hydraulic Controls Upgrade Delivers ImPRESSive Results

Hydraulic Controls Upgrade Delivers ImPRESSive Results

Efficiency and consistency – these are the mainstays in manufacturing at large and paramount to being a successful compression molding manufacturer. They’re also often the main drivers of change for equipment. As an expert in compression molding products, Pride Solutions understands how important this is to both their internal processes and their customers. This is why when they decided to upgrade their compression molding machines’ hydraulic press controls, they reached out to Nott Company.

PROJECT SCOPE

What makes a good compression molding machine? Ben Wick, Pride Solutions Plant Manager shares, “A well-maintained press, a well-designed and maintained mold, and robust easy-to-use controls make for a good compression molding process.” Efficiency and consistency are not possible without optimized controls.

Wick shared that the scope of the project was twofold. Pride expanded its molding department, adding more presses that needed controls and they also needed to update out-of-date technology on existing presses to mitigate risk.

Pride Solutions worked with the team at Nott to come up with a design that would work on the new presses and be compatible with current presses. Time was also of the essence; Pride Solutions needed to be up and running to deliver a prototype for an important customer’s product debut.

Nott Company’s Jacob Undestad worked with the customer and Nott’s engineering team to define the scope of the project. Through several meetings with Pride, it was decided that would redesign the entire control system to add additional data logging functionality and update the power distribution of each unit.

THE PLAN

The original plan was to use Parker’s Industrial Controls, but early in the project, Parker discontinued all the relevant components so Automation Direct was chosen for the controls. Delta Fab was used to build custom enclosures for the system. Nott Company’s Robert Howerton performed all the programming of the new touchscreen module, and the final assembly was done by Nott Company as well.

THE RESULT

According to Wick, the new easy-to-use touch screen holds up better to the process environment and brings with it multiple other improvements like real-time amp monitoring and data logging capabilities.

This project was one of many infrastructure improvements that Pride Solutions implemented simultaneously, resulting in more consistent and efficient data-driven processes for continuous improvement.

The Nott team was able to complete the system in time for Pride to produce their customer’s prototype and deliver it in time for the scheduled tradeshow product debut.

Sharing what it was like to partner with Nott Company, Wick says, “Working with the team at Nott was good. We knew this project was going to be a challenge, and the team worked to understand our process and needs so they could make the best recommendations for our process that would deliver the best result.”
