Our History: From Leather Belts to Engineered Solutions
Founded in 1879 by William S. Nott, Nott Company began by producing leather drive belts for the thriving milling and lumber industries in Minneapolis. Early products were made from animal hides and powered by the water from St. Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River. Over time, our portfolio expanded to include horse harnesses, leather dice cups, and even hand-drawn and motorized fire engines. Reminders of this innovative heritage remain on display in our offices today.
By the 1960s, Nott Company had evolved to meet the changing demands of the industrial marketplace. We introduced two new specialized divisions — Rubber Fabrication and Fluid Power — focused on custom rubber components, system design, and total fluid power solutions. These areas grew into four core divisions: Engineered Materials Solutions, Mobile Fluid Power, Industrial Fluid Power, and Industrial Engineered Solutions.
As the company continued to grow, so did our need to adapt. In recent years, Nott Company has undergone a strategic transformation, realigning our organizational structure to better serve our customers. Under the banner of "One Nott," we've transformed into a functional organization with one operations team, one engineering team, and one sales department serving two markets with application, engineering, and industrial know-how. This unified approach enables us to deliver specialized support, greater responsiveness, and consistent value across all sectors we serve.
Today, Nott Company employs hundreds of people across twelve Midwest locations and proudly operates as an employee-owned (ESOP) business. Our future is built on a foundation of innovation, flexibility, and a shared commitment to growth — for our customers and our team.
